Belgian court extends detention of NATO espionage suspect

The Chamber of Indictments on Monday extended by one month the pre-trial detention of a Canadian woman of Chinese origin suspected of spying while interning at NATO's military headquarters in Mons, rejecting her appeal against an earlier custody order, according to a statement from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office.

Espionage allegations

The investigation concerns suspected "espionage in favour of a third country" and "participation in a criminal organisation," the office said. Authorities have not disclosed the specific country allegedly involved or further details regarding the accusations.

Arrest at SHAPE headquarters

The suspect was arrested in July after drawing the attention of security services at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), Belgian media reported. She remains in custody as part of the federal judicial investigation into suspected acts of espionage.
