Bondi Beach shooter charged with terrorism and 15 counts of murder

Australian authorities have formally charged the surviving suspect from Sunday's Sydney mass shooting with 59 offenses, including terrorism-related murder. The attack, which killed 15, is believed to be Daesh-inspired.
Australian police have laid terrorism charges against the surviving suspect in the devastating mass shooting at Sydney's Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead. The 24-year-old man, who is hospitalized under police guard, faces a total of 59 criminal offenses, including 15 counts of murder.
Details of the charges and attack
Investigators from the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team formally charged the suspect at the hospital on Wednesday. In a statement, police alleged the man "engaged in conduct that caused death, serious injury and endangered life to advance a religious cause and cause fear in the community." They indicated "early indications point to a terrorist attack inspired by Daesh," a designated terrorist organization in Australia. The attack on Sunday was carried out by two suspects, a father and son. The father, reported to be an Indian national who moved to Australia in 1998, was shot dead at the scene. His son, an Australian citizen, was critically injured and apprehended.
A heroic intervention and legislative response
Amid the tragedy, a heroic act emerged. Video footage showed a 43-year-old Syrian-born man, Ahmed Al Ahmed, tackling and disarming one of the gunmen, likely preventing further casualties. Ahmed, a father of two, was shot multiple times during the intervention and is recovering in a Sydney hospital. In response to the attack, New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced that the state parliament will convene next week to pass wide-ranging reforms to gun laws, citing concerns over community safety and social harmony.

Global resonance and the fight against terrorism
The incident has shocked a nation with strict gun controls and sparked immediate political action to tighten regulations further. It also highlights the global challenge of lone-wolf terrorist attacks inspired by extremist ideologies. Nations worldwide, including Türkiye which has suffered numerous terrorist attacks, closely follow such developments, reinforcing the need for robust intelligence sharing, community vigilance, and international cooperation to combat terrorism in all its forms.
