EU's Kallas, commissioners to visit Türkiye ahead of NATO summit

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas will travel to Ankara on June 29 alongside Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos and Internal Affairs Commissioner Magnus Brunner for high-level talks with Turkish officials, as the bloc seeks to strengthen ties with the candidate country ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7-8.
Kallas will be accompanied by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos and European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner during the two-day visit, according to the EU statement. The trio is expected to hold discussions with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and other senior officials in Ankara. This marks Kallas' second official visit to Türkiye since assuming her post as the bloc's top diplomat.
Agenda and bilateral ties
The delegation will review EU-Türkiye relations and discuss shared security concerns amid shifting global dynamics. "The visit will be an opportunity to review EU-Türkiye relations, discuss common challenges in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment and explore additional avenues for cooperation, with Türkiye being a candidate country and a NATO Ally," the bloc said in a statement on Sunday. The talks aim to identify new pathways for collaboration on migration, enlargement policy, and regional stability.
NATO summit context
The Brussels delegation's arrival comes one week before NATO heads of state gather in Ankara on July 7-8 for the alliance's next summit. Türkiye — a founding member of NATO and long-standing candidate for EU membership — occupies a strategic position in the bloc's southern neighborhood. The timing suggests both sides are seeking alignment on security priorities before the multilateral gathering.
