German security services have discovered a professionally concealed weapons stockpile in a forest outside Berlin, believed to have been established by Russian intelligence operatives. The cache, found last autumn, may have been intended for attacks ordered by Moscow. A suspect was arrested in Romania.

German authorities uncovered a hidden arsenal of weapons on the outskirts of Berlin that intelligence services believe was linked to Russian espionage networks. According to public broadcasters NDR and WDR, the cache was discovered in a forested area near the capital and is assessed by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) to have been stashed for use by Russian agents operating on Moscow's orders.

Covert operation and surveillance

The professionally concealed stockpile was first located last autumn following a tip-off. Rather than immediately seizing the weapons, authorities chose to leave the cache undisturbed and placed the site under surveillance in an effort to identify the individuals behind the operation or anyone who might attempt to retrieve the arms. The strategy reflects the seriousness with which German security services are treating the case, which has been under investigation by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office since November on suspicion of preparing an act of violence endangering the state.

Arrest and ongoing investigation

A suspect was apprehended in Romania last autumn in connection with the discovery, with investigators believing the individual may have been responsible for establishing the cache. German security authorities have not disclosed further details about the suspect's identity or the precise nature of the weapons found. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office continues to lead the investigation, examining potential links to broader Russian intelligence operations in Europe.

Official silence and regional concerns

Neither German authorities nor the Russian Embassy in Berlin have issued official statements regarding the allegations. The case emerges amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO member states, with European security services on high alert for potential sabotage and intelligence activities.
