Palestinian health authorities have confirmed that 10 more Gazans were killed over the past day, pushing the enclave's overall death toll beyond 73,400 since October 2023. Despite a ceasefire agreement in place since last year, ongoing Israeli shelling and gunfire have added to the mounting casualty figures, with thousands more wounded and critical infrastructure reduced to rubble.

The health ministry in Gaza reported on Thursday that 10 Palestinians had been killed and 25 injured in the previous 24 hours, lifting the total death count from Israel's military campaign to 73,417. The daily update also recorded 174,360 wounded since the conflict began in October 2023, though ministry officials noted that many victims remain trapped under debris or inaccessible to rescue teams due to continued hostilities in the coastal territory.

Ceasefire violations and mounting toll

Although an October 2025 truce had raised hopes for a sustained lull, Israeli forces have persisted with artillery strikes and small-arms fire across various parts of the enclave, according to local sources. The ministry attributed an additional 1,283 fatalities and 4,248 injuries specifically to post-truce violations, underscoring the fragility of the agreement. Rescue crews have struggled to reach affected areas, with ambulance and civil defence units hampered by damaged roads and ongoing security risks.

Widespread destruction and reconstruction costs

Beyond the human toll, the conflict has exacted a devastating toll on civilian infrastructure, with an estimated 90% of Gaza's facilities either damaged or destroyed. Schools, hospitals, water systems, and residential neighbourhoods lie in ruins, displacing hundreds of thousands of residents. The United Nations has projected that reconstruction will require approximately $70 billion, a figure that highlights the immense challenge facing any future recovery effort. International observers have repeatedly called for a durable ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access, yet the cycle of violence shows little sign of abating as the death count continues to climb.
