German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Ukraine's capital on Saturday for high-level talks focused on winter preparedness and defense cooperation, traveling to mark the 35th anniversary of Kyiv's independence from Moscow. The German Federal Foreign Office said the visit prioritizes preparations for the coming winter, including providing generators and other energy equipment to bolster Ukraine's critical infrastructure.
Berlin described Ukraine as an "important security partner," noting that Germany stands to gain valuable insights from Kyiv's experience in "dealing with hybrid threats, modern warfare, and the resilience of state and societal structures." The statement highlighted ongoing efforts to protect Ukrainian energy facilities amid continued hostilities.
Defense cooperation expansion
The trip also centers on deepening military ties between the two European states. "Therefore, the visit will focus equally on deepening security and defense cooperation with Ukraine – particularly in strengthening military capabilities, exchanging experiences, and jointly building long-term security structures," the Foreign Office said.
Wadephul's arrival comes as Ukraine continues to face Russian attacks on its civilian infrastructure ahead of the Aug. 24 independence day commemorations. Germany remains one of Kyiv's largest military donors, supplying billions of euros in weapons and equipment since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
