Hamburg Airport resumes operations after security breach

Hamburg Airport spokesperson Katja Bromm said operations gradually resumed Friday afternoon after a traveler accidentally pressed an emergency door button in Terminal 2, triggering a full terminal evacuation that forced passengers to disembark and caused delays of up to three hours.
Hamburg Airport gradually resumed operations on Friday afternoon after a passenger accidentally triggered a security alarm by pressing an emergency door button in Terminal 2, forcing the evacuation of the secure perimeter and temporary suspension of all departures.
Unauthorized access triggers alarm
Airport spokesperson Katja Bromm told the Bild newspaper that the traveler apparently pressed the button by mistake, briefly gaining unauthorized access to the restricted area. The individual was quickly detained and taken to an airport police station for questioning.
Precautionary sweep ordered
Despite the swift arrest, authorities ordered a comprehensive sweep of the secure perimeter as a precautionary measure. Passengers who had already cleared security were escorted out of the restricted zone, while those seated on aircraft were instructed to disembark — temporarily halting all flight operations.
Travel disruptions continue
The security breach created significant disruptions for hundreds of travelers, with flight delays extending up to three hours reported throughout the afternoon. Terminal 2 remained closed during the security sweep before authorities gave the all-clear and normal activities slowly resumed.
