Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Sunday that Tehran is fighting a "full-scale war" across economic, military and security domains, acknowledging government failures while vowing to resist what he called the "most crushing" US sanctions and calling for national unity amid stalled diplomatic efforts.
War declaration
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared on Sunday that the Islamic Republic is fighting a war on multiple fronts. "We are in a full-scale economic, military and security war," he said in a televised address carried by the official IRNA news agency. The president acknowledged the administration is "ashamed" of ongoing economic hardships while vowing to overcome the difficulties.
US pressure and defiance
"(US President Donald) Trump easily says that they will impose the most crushing or the most terrible sanctions on Iran," Pezeshkian stated. He added that Tehran is "standing firm" and striving to serve the Iranian people amid what he called an "unequal war." "The enemy had assessed that if Iran falls, it will become Venezuela," he said. "Not only did it not happen, but it became a power that amazed the world with its resistance, solidarity and cohesion."
Appeal for unity
The president stressed that his administration is laboring "with all our might to avoid division, conflicts and egos" as the country navigates the multifaceted crisis. The remarks reflect ongoing efforts to project national resilience despite Washington's renewed economic restrictions.
Diplomatic impasse
The speech comes amid stalled negotiations with the United States following a June memorandum of understanding brokered by Pakistani and Qatari mediation that ended hostilities which began in February. Talks have since faltered over disputes regarding implementation of the agreement and arrangements for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments.
