Israel assassinates Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil after Mossad threats

Israeli forces killed Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, who had repeatedly received death threats from Mossad, in a targeted attack in southern Lebanon. Her colleague Zainab Faraj was wounded. The Israeli army later admitted to targeting the journalists, while also attacking Red Cross crews attempting to reach the scene.
Israeli occupation forces killed Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil on Tuesday in a targeted strike in the village of Tayri, near the southern city of Nabatieh. Khalil, a reporter for Al-Akhbar newspaper, and her colleague Zainab Faraj had taken shelter in a house after Israeli forces struck a nearby vehicle, killing two people. The army pursued the journalists and launched a second strike on the house, killing Khalil and wounding Faraj.
Mossad threats and Israeli admission
Khalil had previously revealed in a video interview that she had received repeated death threats from Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service. She noted that threats against female journalists began escalating after September 9, 2023. The Israeli army later issued a statement admitting it had deliberately targeted the journalists, claiming they posed a threat after crossing an alleged “defense line” near a Hezbollah military facility.
Red Cross attacked, rescue efforts blocked
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that Israeli forces fired sound grenades and live ammunition at Lebanese Red Cross ambulances trying to reach the wounded journalists, preventing rescue efforts. Civil defense teams eventually recovered Khalil’s body from the rubble. Khalil has been described in Lebanese media as “Lebanon’s Shireen Abu Akleh,” referencing the veteran Al Jazeera journalist assassinated by Israeli forces in Jenin in 2022 after months of threats.
