Israel's Finance Ministry has estimated the economic damage from a labor strike at Ben Gurion Airport at between 25 million and 30 million shekels ($8.3 million to $10 million), according to Israeli media reports on Thursday.
Economic toll
Ynet reported that the preliminary assessment by the Finance Ministry outlined losses spanning passenger time delays, direct operational costs to carriers, revenue shortfalls for the Israel Airports Authority, and disruptions to cargo logistics and supply chains. The damage also extends to the tourism and hospitality sectors, which faced cascading effects from the work stoppage.
Infrastructure constraints
The ministry attributed the severe economic impact to deep-rooted structural weaknesses within Israel's aviation sector. "According to the ministry, the cause of the damage stems from the following problems: Israel's aviation infrastructure capacity is very limited, the national aviation infrastructure depends on a single operator only and the workers' committee prevents efficiency, flexibility and airport development," Ynet reported.
Operational disruption
Operations at Ben Gurion Airport resumed after a roughly one-hour halt when a labor dispute forced the closure of all check-in counters, with several inbound flights forced to turn back to their countries of origin. Employees of four ground services companies also halted work during the stoppage — one of the year's busiest travel periods when the airport handles approximately 100,000 passengers and around 600 flights daily.
