Continued violations
The incursions follow a similar operation on Sunday when Israeli troops advanced into Taranja village in the Quneitra countryside and raided a residential home. Israel has maintained a military presence in the Syrian buffer zone since declaring the 1974 disengagement agreement collapsed following the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime in late 2024.
Diplomatic channel
On August 23, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met an Israeli delegation in Jordan under US mediation to discuss mechanisms for halting attacks and reviving security negotiations, according to Syria’s SANA news agency. The talks focused on practical steps to reduce escalation despite the continued military activity.
President Ahmad al-Sharaa stated on July 26 that Damascus was working toward a security agreement that could pave the way for comprehensive peace without relinquishing Syria’s claim to the Golan Heights, which Israeli forces seized in 1967 and continue to occupy alongside Palestinian and Lebanese territories.
