Macron calls for Gaza peace and credible Ukraine deterrence at G20

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed multiple global conflicts during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, emphasizing the need to preserve peace in Gaza while warning that any Ukraine settlement must include credible deterrence against Russia. He criticized double standards in international responses to conflicts and outlined France's diplomatic engagements.
French President Emmanuel Macron has articulated France's positions on multiple international crises during the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg, emphasizing consistent principles across war zones from Gaza to Ukraine.
Principles for Conflict Resolution
Macron stressed that global conflicts must be addressed with full respect for the UN Charter and territorial integrity of states. He criticized what he described as double standards in the international community's approach to different conflicts, asserting that France applies a single, consistent principle protecting territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and human dignity across all regions.
Gaza and Middle East Diplomacy
Regarding the situation in Gaza, Macron noted that conditions remain highly challenging and emphasized France's goal of preserving peace while ensuring all sides meet their commitments. He revealed that France and Saudi Arabia serve as guarantors of the New York Declaration's timeline and that Paris is engaging directly with Israel on a phased withdrawal from southern Lebanon, supported by US efforts to help the Beirut government regain authority in the area.
Ukraine Negotiations and European Security
Commenting on the US peace plan for Ukraine, Macron acknowledged positive elements but stressed that any settlement must address Europe's security concerns. He warned that limitations on the Ukrainian military could undermine the country's sovereignty, emphasizing that without credible deterrence, Russia could break its commitments. The French president announced that American, Ukrainian, and European negotiators will meet in Geneva on Sunday, with the Volunteer Coalition convening online November 25.
Regional Relations and Domestic Controversy
Macron also addressed France's relationship with Algeria, noting that significant improvements are needed in security, migration, and economic cooperation. He defended French Chief of Defense Staff Fabien Mandon against controversy, stating the general's remarks about France being "prepared to lose children" in the face of Russian threats were taken out of context and expressing full support for his military leader.
