Qatari PM meets Iranian FM in Tehran to de-escalate tensions

Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Thursday to discuss regional de-escalation efforts, according to Iran's Foreign Ministry. Sheikh Mohammed, who also serves as Qatar's foreign minister, traveled to the Iranian capital as Doha continues its mediation role between Tehran and Washington amid heightened tensions over the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities released images from the meeting but did not immediately provide details of the discussions.

Freedom of navigation

Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said ahead of the visit that Sheikh Mohammed would meet Iranian officials to discuss ways to reduce tensions and create conditions conducive to dialogue. He stated that the talks would also address freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the need to restore the waterway to the status quo that existed before February 28, according to the ministry.

Stalled peace initiatives

The visit marks Sheikh Mohammed's first trip to Iran since the conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Tehran. Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in June following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, but implementation has stalled amid disagreements over the strategic waterway. The US resumed military attacks on Iran last month, prompting Tehran to strike American military assets in Arab countries aligned with Washington.
