US President Donald Trump said on Monday that American businesses are returning from Canada to avoid tariffs. He renewed his criticism of the bilateral trade relationship and cited annual trade deficits exceeding $60 billion.
Truth Social claims
Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated that the US has been losing "more than 60 Billion Dollars a year" with Canada. "For many years, the USA has been losing more than 60 Billion Dollars a year with Canada. Why???" he wrote, according to the post.
Business return
Trump also said companies that had previously moved operations out of the US are now coming back to avoid tariffs. "Our long ago stolen businesses are now coming back to America in order to avoid paying tariffs," he said, adding that "They are lining up, just like the rest of the World!!!"
The remarks come as trade issues and tariffs remain a central focus of the administration's economic agenda. Washington has recently implemented new duties on imports from multiple countries including Canada.
