US President Donald Trump voiced optimism over the future of relations with China during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing, saying bilateral ties could become “better than ever before.”

The remarks came during Trump’s first official visit to China since returning to office, as the two leaders met at the Great Hall of the People amid global economic uncertainty and ongoing regional tensions.

Trump praises Xi and bilateral relationship

Trump described Xi as “a great leader” and emphasized what he called a strong personal relationship between the two presidents, saying previous disputes had been resolved through direct communication.

“We’ve had a fantastic relationship,” Trump said, adding that both sides had consistently managed tensions quickly whenever problems emerged.

Chinese children waving US and Chinese flags welcomed the leaders during an official ceremony in Beijing, with Trump later describing the reception as impressive.

Trade and economic cooperation in focus

The summit agenda includes discussions on trade, tariffs, Taiwan and the Middle East conflict, with Trump highlighting the importance of expanding economic cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump was accompanied by senior US officials including Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth, alongside leading American business executives.

The delegation included figures such as Elon Musk, Jensen Huang and Tim Cook, reflecting the strong commercial dimension of the visit.

Business leaders signal positive talks

Several executives gave optimistic reactions following the closed-door discussions between Trump and Xi, which reportedly lasted more than two hours.

Musk described the meetings as producing “many good things,” while Huang said both leaders were “incredible” during the talks.

The summit comes as Washington and Beijing attempt to stabilize relations despite disagreements over trade policies, technology competition and regional security issues.

Middle East tensions remain on agenda

The discussions also took place against the backdrop of continuing tensions linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

China has repeatedly called for diplomacy and de-escalation in the region, while the United States has accused Beijing of supporting Iran’s economic and military capabilities.

Despite geopolitical tensions, both sides signaled interest in maintaining dialogue and strengthening economic engagement during the Beijing summit.
