The United Arab Emirates has suspended all commercial and banking transactions with Iran until further notice, following the detection of two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting UAE waters. The move escalates regional tensions after US-Israel strikes on Iran, while a mediated peace agreement between Tehran and Washington remains stalled.

The United Arab Emirates has imposed an indefinite halt on all trade exchanges and financial dealings with Iran, according to an official statement carried by UAE's state-run WAM news agency. The suspension, announced by the Foreign Ministry's strategic communications director, comes without immediate elaboration on its scope or duration. The decision arrives amid heightened Gulf instability, directly impacting supply chains and banking corridors that have long connected the two shores of the Persian Gulf.

Missile detection precedes economic rupture

The trade freeze follows a security alert from the UAE Defense Ministry, which reported tracking two Iranian ballistic missiles directed at maritime navigation routes. While no casualties or damage were confirmed, the incident underscored the fragility of regional waters, through which a significant portion of global oil shipments transits. The UAE, a key commercial hub hosting Western military assets, has increasingly found itself caught between Tehran's retaliatory posture and Washington's military pressure.

Broader Middle East tensions and collapsed talks

The suspension comes against the backdrop of joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Iranian positions, which prompted Tehran to launch counterstrikes against regional states, including the UAE. In mid-June, Iran and the US had signed a memorandum of understanding under Pakistani mediation, aimed at ending hostilities and establishing a lasting peace framework. However, negotiations have since collapsed over disagreements concerning the memorandum's provisions and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint vital to global energy markets.
