Ukrainian authorities state Russia has used Kinzhal hypersonic missiles to attack the port of Odesa for the first time in the war, wounding four people and damaging infrastructure. Moscow confirmed launching Kinzhal strikes in retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian targets.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported on Saturday that Russian forces have attacked the port of Odesa using Kinzhal hypersonic missiles for the first time since the invasion began. The strike wounded four people and caused damage to energy infrastructure and several administrative buildings in the strategic Black Sea city.

Russian confirmation and stated rationale

The Russian Defense Ministry separately confirmed it had carried out strikes using Kinzhal missiles against multiple targets in Ukraine but did not specify locations. In its statement, Moscow framed the attack as a retaliatory measure for what it described as Ukrainian strikes on civilian objects inside Russia. This marks a notable escalation in the weaponry used against Odesa's port infrastructure.

A pattern of escalating strikes on Black Sea targets

The attack follows a pattern of increased focus on Ukraine's port facilities, which are critical for the country's grain exports and maritime trade. Last week, during a visit to India, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow might respond to Ukrainian naval drone attacks on tankers by targeting Ukrainian Black Sea ports, signaling a deliberate escalation in the maritime domain.

Strategic significance of the Kinzhal weapon

The use of the air-launched Kinzhal (Dagger) missile, which Russia describes as a hypersonic weapon difficult to intercept with existing air defenses, represents a technical escalation in the bombardment of Odesa. The strike underscores the ongoing threat to Ukraine's southern coastline and its export capabilities despite a nominal ceasefire in other sectors.
