US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack expressed deep concern on Tuesday over confirmed Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in northern Syria, describing the attack as an "unnecessary escalation" that does not advance regional stability.
Speaking on the US social media platform X, Barrack stated: "We are deeply concerned that the confirmed Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Airbase constitute an unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability." He noted that the Ahmad Al-Sharra government has neither adopted a predatory posture nor maintained proxy forces, adding that the administration has repeatedly indicated a preference for de-escalation with Israel.
Washington pushes diplomatic track
Barrack — who also serves as US ambassador to Türkiye — emphasized Washington's commitment to hosting discussions between the parties, saying: "The United States has in the past, and will continue in the future, to host discussions to encourage diplomatic cadence over kinetic frustration for both nations." The envoy did not specify when such talks might resume, though diplomatic channels between Washington and Damascus have remained open since the transition.
Israeli raid damages runway
Israeli aircraft carried out eight airstrikes targeting the runway of Abu al-Duhur Military Airbase in the eastern countryside of Idlib early Tuesday, causing material damage to the facility's infrastructure without resulting in casualties, according to Al-Ikhbariyya TV. The facility lies approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Aleppo in northern Syria and has previously supported both military and humanitarian logistics operations.
