US Central Command said on Tuesday that its forces initiated self-defense strikes against Iranian targets. The operation came at President Donald Trump's direction in response to the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter.
Proportional response
The command announced the operation commenced at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. "The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression," CENTCOM said on social media platform X.
Presidential directive
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump told reporters Washington was compelled to retaliate against the alleged Iranian attack. The Apache was destroyed on Monday in an incident Washington attributes to Tehran, though defense officials have not disclosed the retaliatory strike locations.
