Xi's call for continuity
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called on the Communist Party to continue advancing socialism with Chinese characteristics as the nation marked the centenary of late leader Jiang Zemin's birth. Xi, who also serves as CPC Central Committee general secretary and Central Military Commission chairman, said during a gathering at Beijing's Great Hall of the People, according to the Global Times.
The event honored Jiang, who led the party from 1989 to 2002 and served as president from 1993 to 2003. Xi stated that the party and Chinese people of all ethnic groups should draw inspiration from Jiang's life to advance socialist development and modernization efforts.
Jiang's economic legacy
Born on August 17, 1926, in Yangzhou in Jiangsu province, Jiang presided over rapid economic expansion and deeper global integration. He led China through its 2001 WTO accession and market reforms before dying in Shanghai on November 30, 2022, at 96.
The commemoration highlighted Jiang's contributions to China's transformation during his 13-year tenure. Xi's administration continues emphasizing socialist development while navigating trade relations and expanding Beijing's global influence.
