The German Research Center for Geosciences recorded a magnitude 5.9 aftershock early Monday in Indonesia's Flores region, which was devastated by a 7.7 quake that killed at least 47 people and prompted authorities to declare a 14-day emergency status, as rescue teams continued search operations for survivors.
Fresh tremor rocks Flores
A magnitude 5.9 aftershock struck Indonesia's Flores region early Monday just days after a powerful earthquake devastated the island, killing dozens and displacing thousands, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ). The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) with its epicenter located at 8.57 degrees south latitude and 121.55 degrees east longitude, GFZ data showed.
Weekend quake kills dozens
No immediate reports of damage or casualties emerged from Monday's aftershock, which struck while rescue operations were still underway across the region. Saturday's magnitude 7.7 earthquake killed at least 47 people across six regencies in eastern Flores Island, prompting Indonesian authorities to declare a 14-day emergency response status, according to state media reports.
Relief operations continue
The disaster damaged 914 homes, 93 educational facilities, 36 health centers and 38 government offices. Search and rescue teams continued operations Sunday to locate survivors trapped beneath rubble, while authorities restored fuel and liquefied petroleum gas supplies across the island, though nearly 6,000 residents remained displaced in the Sikka, Manggarai, Nagekeo, Bima and Selayar districts.
