The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service said on Monday that Western intelligence agencies are preparing to accuse Moscow of illegally supplying weapons to drug cartels in Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico, claiming that Russian arms captured in Ukraine are being planted to fabricate evidence.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service on Monday accused Western intelligence agencies of orchestrating a plot to frame Moscow for arming drug cartels in Latin America, alleging that weapons captured in Ukraine were being smuggled to the region to create false evidence.

Latin America arms plot

The SVR said in a statement that an intelligence service of "a Western country" working with Ukraine intends to accuse Russia of illegal arms supplies to organized crime groups. "This time, the events are unfolding on the Latin American stage, and the plot itself resembles a scene from a third-rate crime narcodrama. The plan is to accuse Russia of illegal arms supplies to drug cartels and other criminal groups in Venezuela, Colombia, and Mexico," it said.

According to the agency, Russian-made weapons seized by Ukrainian forces have already been brought into the three countries and will be used to stage the appearance of covert arms shipments. The SVR added that fabricated audio and video recordings, alongside forged documents purportedly implicating Russian military personnel, were also in preparation.

Geopolitical motives

The intelligence service stated that the campaign aims to undermine Russia's relations with Latin American nations and pressure their governments into backing Western policies toward Moscow. "From the very beginning of the Ukrainian conflict, the information war waged by the Euro-Atlantic elites against Russia has been characterized by the planting and promotion of the most vile narratives -- beyond the bounds of morality and law," the SVR said.

The agency did not identify the specific Western country involved and offered no publicly verifiable evidence to substantiate its claims. The SVR noted that Western governments and intelligence agencies had previously relied on "fabricated incidents" as part of broader information operations against Russia.
