The Swiss Cities Association called for a coordinated national strategy to adapt urban centers to climate change and extreme heat, warning that municipalities cannot tackle rising temperatures without structured funding and stronger federal-cantonal coordination.
National coordination urged
The Swiss Cities Association on Sunday called for a nationwide framework to coordinate climate adaptation efforts across Switzerland's urban centers, warning that cities alone cannot tackle the escalating threat of heat waves and rising temperatures. Association president Hanspeter Hilfiker told Sonntagsblick that adapting to climate change requires a society-wide effort, stating that cities can only succeed through collaboration with cantonal and federal authorities. Swissinfo reported that while municipalities have already implemented various measures, they still lack the structured funding mechanisms necessary to prioritize long-term resilience projects.
Urban cooling measures
Hilfiker outlined several concrete steps to reduce urban heat, including removing paving from public spaces, expanding urban greenery, and renovating school buildings to better withstand high temperatures. He noted that these infrastructure changes form the backbone of any comprehensive strategy to keep urban environments habitable as global warming intensifies. The association has repeatedly stressed that isolated municipal efforts remain insufficient without broader systemic backing.
Critical infrastructure needs
The association also advocated for installing air-conditioning systems in critical indoor facilities such as hospitals and schools, though Hilfiker emphasized that cooling technology represents merely "one small piece of the jigsaw" in ensuring cities remain livable during extreme heat events. The call comes as Switzerland braces for increasingly severe summer temperatures that threaten public health and strain existing urban infrastructure across the confederation.
