Turkish clubs recorded contrasting results in their European playoff first legs Thursday as Besiktas beat Kauno Zalgiris 3-0, while Trabzonspor suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Ferencvaros. Besiktas will take a commanding advantage to Lithuania for next week’s return leg, while Trabzonspor must overturn a one-goal deficit in Hungary.
In Thursday’s European playoff openers, Türkiye’s representatives experienced sharply different fates. Besiktas delivered a dominant home performance to all but seal their progression, whereas Trabzonspor stumbled at home, leaving their continental campaign hanging in the balance ahead of difficult return fixtures.
Besiktas dominate from the start
The Black Eagles wasted no time asserting control over the Lithuanian visitors, Kauno Zalgiris. Within the opening six minutes, Oh Hyeon-gyu met Ridvan Yilmaz’s pinpoint delivery to slot home the opener. Ridvan turned provider again shortly after, setting up Amir Murillo to double the lead and put the Istanbul giants firmly in the driver’s seat. Besiktas continued to press relentlessly, and their persistence paid off in the second half when Orkun Kokcu calmly converted a penalty, extending the advantage to 3-0. New signing Dusan Vlahovic entered the fray for his debut and nearly marked the occasion with a goal, but his header was denied. The commanding victory gives Besiktas a comfortable cushion ahead of the decisive second leg in Kaunas.
Trabzonspor frustrated at home
In contrast, Trabzonspor’s evening in northeastern Türkiye turned sour despite a promising start. Mohamed Salah squandered an early one-on-one chance, and the visitors from Hungary made them pay. Ferencvaros struck with their first real attack as Kristoffer Zachariassen headed home to silence the home crowd. Trabzonspor pushed forward in the second half with urgency, yet fortune eluded them. Paul Onuachu rattled the crossbar with a powerful header, and Salah later set up Wagner Pina, only for the defender’s effort to be saved. Their frustrations boiled over in stoppage time when Chibuike Nwaiwu received a straight red card for violent conduct, compounding the misery. Trabzonspor now face an uphill battle to overturn the deficit in Hungary.
Road ahead for Turkish sides
With the return legs looming, Besiktas appear poised to advance comfortably, while Trabzonspor must summon a resilient performance in Budapest to keep their European dreams alive. The contrasting results highlight the unpredictable nature of continental competition, as Türkiye’s clubs brace for decisive encounters next week.
