Players of Fenerbahce celebrate after winning the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second-leg match between Sturm Graz and Fenerbahce at Liebenau Stadium in Graz, Austria on August 11, 2026.Fenerbahce secured a 1-0 away victory over Sturm Graz on Tuesday, advancing 3-0 on aggregate to reach the UEFA Champions League playoff round. The Yellow Canaries now prepare for a two-legged tie against French giants Lyon, with the first leg scheduled in Türkiye on Aug. 18.
Fenerbahce punched their ticket to the Champions League playoff stage with a disciplined performance in Austria, overcoming Sturm Graz 1-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate. The Turkish representative withstood early pressure at Stadion Graz-Liebenau before a second-half penalty proved decisive, keeping their European dream alive as they now turn their attention to a heavyweight clash with Lyon.
Early resistance from the hosts
The Austrian outfit started the match with intense energy, applying a high press that initially disrupted Fenerbahce’s rhythm and prevented the visitors from establishing any fluid attacking moves. However, the Yellow Canaries gradually found their footing as the first half progressed. Anderson Talisca and Kerem Akturkoglu began to test Sturm Graz’s backline, forcing goalkeeper Daniil Khudyakov into a series of important saves. The home side registered their first shot on target in the 38th minute, but Fenerbahce’s Mert Gunok was alert to deny Jon Gorenc Stankovic’s header, ensuring the scoreline remained goalless at the break.
Talisca delivers from the spot
After the interval, Sturm Graz again emerged with renewed vigour, dominating possession and maintaining sustained pressure for the opening 20 minutes of the second half. Yet Fenerbahce remained compact and resilient, absorbing the attacks before seizing their opportunity. In the 65th minute, Talisca was brought down inside the penalty area, and the Brazilian forward calmly stepped up to convert the resulting spot-kick. The goal marked his fourth in as many matches across all competitions, underlining his importance to Jose Mourinho’s side in this qualifying campaign.
Defensive resolve secures the aggregate triumph
Khudyakov denied Akturkoglu from a one-on-one chance in the 87th minute, but Fenerbahce’s defence held firm in the closing stages to protect their slender lead. The victory confirms their place in the playoff round, where they will host Lyon in the first leg on Tuesday, Aug. 18, before travelling to France for the return fixture on Aug. 26. The winner over two legs will secure a spot in the prestigious Champions League group stage. Meanwhile, Sturm Graz will drop down to the Europa League following their elimination.
