Brazilian legend Ronaldinho has arrived in Italy to begin his unexpected comeback with Serie C side Ravenna, 11 years after his last professional match. The 46-year-old 2005 Ballon d'Or winner hopes to score his 300th career goal and has also acquired a stake in the club.
Football icon Ronaldinho touched down in Italy on Thursday to officially launch his astonishing return to professional football with Ravenna, marking his first competitive involvement since 2015. The former Barcelona and AC Milan playmaker, who signed with the Serie C outfit in June, was warmly welcomed by thousands of passionate supporters during the club's beachside presentation ceremony at Marina di Ravenna.
A new chapter in Italy's third tier
The 46-year-old Brazilian has not only committed to playing but has also purchased a share in the historic club, which last featured in Serie B during the 2007-08 campaign. Ravenna, who finished third in Group B last season, are eager to secure promotion, and the arrival of one of football's most celebrated figures has generated significant excitement. While Ronaldinho will be officially registered as a player, it remains uncertain when he will make his debut or how frequently he will feature.
Chasing a historic milestone
One of the primary motivations for Ronaldinho's return is the pursuit of his 300th career goal. When asked about reaching that landmark, he remarked: "If that happens, it will be even more beautiful." He added: "I don't know, that depends on the president, on the trainer. I came here because of the friendship we have." Ravenna President Ignazio Cipriani has openly expressed his dream of seeing the Brazilian score his final professional goal in the club's colours.
A glittering career revived
Ronaldinho, a key member of Brazil's 2002 World Cup-winning squad and the 2005 Ballon d'Or recipient, also secured a Champions League title with Barcelona and a Serie A crown with AC Milan. His last professional appearance came for Fluminense in 2015, before he formally announced his retirement in 2018. While he will not feature in Ravenna's season opener against Reggiana on Monday, fans across Italy and beyond will be watching closely to see if the magician can still weave his spells on the pitch.
