Türkiye first to qualify for FIBA World Cup after Iceland rout

Türkiye's Men's National Basketball Team became the first nation to qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup on Monday after defeating Iceland 110-73 in Reykjavik, extending their perfect record in the European Qualifiers to eight victories.

Dominant display in Reykjavik

Playing at the Laugardalsholl Sports Center, the national team established a commanding 33-14 lead by the end of the first quarter, with captain Cedi Osman and Malachi Flynn combining for 24 points. Onuralp Bitim added 15 points in the second quarter to help extend the advantage to 60-37 at halftime, and Türkiye maintained control throughout the second half to complete the 37-point victory.

Historic qualification

The victory ensured Türkiye became the first team to secure their ticket for the 2027 tournament through the European Qualifiers, marking the sixth World Cup appearance for the Turkish side. The national team completed the first round with a perfect 6-0 record and maintained their flawless run in the second phase, where teams carry over results from the opening stage, to sit alone at the top of Group J.

Türkiye stands as the only unbeaten team remaining in round two of the European Qualifiers after Poland, competing in Group K, suffered its first defeat. The qualification secures the sixth World Cup appearance for the Turkish Men's National Basketball Team.

Road ahead

Türkiye will travel to Italy for their next qualifier on November 26 before returning home to host Iceland again on November 29. The national team will look to maintain their perfect record through the remaining fixtures in Group J.
