Drone attack targets US base near Baghdad airport

A drone strike hit a US military facility near Baghdad International Airport late Sunday, according to Iraqi factions. The group Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed the attack targeted Victoria base, with videos showing flames at the site. No official comment from US or Iraqi authorities yet. Türkiye, a close neighbor, remains vigilant against regional spillover.
Unmanned aerial vehicles struck a US base located close to Baghdad International Airport on Sunday night, as reported by Telegram channels linked to an Iraqi militant umbrella group calling itself the Islamic Resistance in Iraq. The factions asserted that the assault hit Victoria base, and several channels shared video footage purportedly showing fire erupting at the location. “There are flames rising from the US-occupied Victoria base after it was attacked by drones,” one channel stated.
No Official Confirmation
As of early Monday, neither American nor Iraqi officials have issued any statement regarding the reported drone strike. The lack of immediate response leaves the exact scale of damage and potential casualties unclear.
Wider Conflict and Türkiye’s Stance
The attack comes amid heightened regional volatility following the joint US‑Israeli air campaign against Iran that began on February 28. That offensive has killed over 1,340 people, including Iran’s former Supreme Leader. Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US assets, disrupting global markets and aviation. As a neighboring country with strong ties to both Iraq and Iran, Türkiye continues to advocate for restraint and dialogue, warning that further attacks on Iraqi soil could destabilize its southeastern border and threaten regional trade routes.
