The foreign ministers of Egypt and Iran on Saturday discussed efforts to de-escalate regional tensions and implement a memorandum between Tehran and Washington, emphasizing the importance of intensifying diplomatic initiatives to ensure freedom of navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Diplomatic consultations
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Saturday discussed regional de-escalation efforts and the stalled implementation of a memorandum between Tehran and Washington aimed at ending hostilities, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said.
The two ministers reviewed the overall situation and ongoing efforts "to create an environment conducive to de-escalation and a return to the diplomatic path – whether regarding the negotiation track between Oman and Iran or the resumption of the implementation of the US-Iran memorandum with the ultimate goal of reaching a comprehensive and sustainable agreement that addresses various concerns and enhances regional security and stability," the ministry said. Abdelatty emphasized the importance of intensifying diplomatic initiatives to reduce current tensions.
Regional security concerns
Abdelatty underscored the critical importance of ensuring freedom of international navigation and respecting the security and stability of Gulf states, "in a manner that serves the interests of all the region's peoples," the ministry stated. The Egyptian minister also listened to Araghchi's perspective on current developments and the negotiation process, according to the statement. Both diplomats emphasized the need for peaceful understandings to restore stability.
Stalled implementation
Iran and the United States signed the memorandum of understanding in June through Pakistani and Qatari mediation, ending hostilities and opening a 60-day window for negotiations toward a final agreement. Talks have since stalled amid disputes over implementation and arrangements for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas exports. The blockade has disrupted regional trade and heightened concerns among Gulf states.
