Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf has been appointed as Tehran's special envoy to China and will coordinate various national bodies on matters related to Beijing, after President Masoud Pezeshkian proposed the appointment and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei approved it, according to a Sunday report by Tasnim news agency.
Expanded authority
Qalibaf will serve as a coordinator across various national bodies for affairs related to China with an enhanced mandate, informed sources told the semi-official news agency. "Given the nature of Qalibaf's appointment, his mandate carries a different level of authority compared to previous representatives," the sources said, highlighting the broader scope of his diplomatic responsibilities.
Institutional approval
The appointment was proposed by President Masoud Pezeshkian and subsequently approved by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, Tasnim noted. The report did not clarify whether Qalibaf would continue serving as parliament speaker while holding the special envoy post, leaving questions regarding the practical division of his institutional responsibilities.
