Iran sets conditions for Hormuz reopening after Qatari talks

Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei said Thursday that the United States must take practical steps to meet Tehran's conditions before the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened, according to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency. "The US must first take practical measures toward fulfilling Iran's conditions, after which Iran will move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz," Rezaei said, adding that Tehran currently distrusts Washington and accusing it of repeatedly betraying diplomacy and negotiations.

Tehran warns of 'historic' retaliation

The top Iranian security official warned that any "hostile action" by Washington against Tehran would inflict damage on American military and economic interests "that will be recorded in history." The statement underscores the high stakes of the ongoing standoff over the vital waterway — through which approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies flowed before the war began.

Qatar presses for de-escalation

The Qatari Foreign Ministry said the meeting addressed regional developments and international efforts to reduce tensions. Sheikh Mohammed stressed the importance of exercising "wisdom and responsibility" to preserve Gulf security, according to the ministry's statement.

The visit marks the Qatari foreign minister's first trip to Iran since the conflict began with US and Israeli strikes in late February. Implementation of the June memorandum of understanding has stalled amid differences over navigation rights in the strait, which has remained blocked since hostilities commenced.
