Qatar, Iran discuss 'navigational corridor' through Hormuz Strait

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran on Thursday to discuss establishing a "temporary joint navigational corridor" through the Strait of Hormuz, the Qatari Foreign Ministry said. The talks addressed a proposed transitional framework that would include joint efforts to clear the waterway of mines alongside the corridor arrangement.

Calls for sovereignty and dialogue

Sheikh Mohammed stressed the need to "respect the sovereignty of neighboring states and freedom of navigation," while also continuing diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions, the ministry said. The meeting formed part of ongoing diplomatic initiatives by both countries aimed at fostering conditions conducive to dialogue across the region.

Iranian response

Araghchi expressed Tehran's appreciation for Qatar's "continued diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions and supporting dialogue," according to the statement. The Iranian foreign minister welcomed Doha's role in regional deescalation initiatives as the two nations explored mechanisms to secure maritime passage through the contested chokepoint.

Strategic significance of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz — a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman — serves as a critical global shipping route and the primary chokepoint for oil and gas shipments originating from the Persian Gulf. The proposed corridor comes amid heightened regional tensions affecting maritime security in the strategic passage.
