Iranian diplomat issues stark warning after Bushehr bombing

Iran’s top diplomat issued a stark warning to Gulf Arab states on Saturday, stating that any radioactive contamination from attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities would threaten their own capitals rather than Tehran. Abbas Araghchi’s comments came after a joint US-Israeli airstrike hit Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, killing at least one person.
Araghchi’s social media warning
In a post on X, the Iranian foreign minister drew a direct comparison to Western reactions during the Ukraine war. “Remember the Western outrage about hostilities near Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine?” he wrote. Araghchi then revealed that Israel and the United States have bombed Bushehr four times. “Radioactive fallout will end life in GCC capitals, not Tehran,” he added, warning that attacks on Iranian petrochemical facilities further expose the “real objectives” of Iran’s adversaries.
Escalating regional conflict
Saturday’s strike on Bushehr is the latest escalation in a rapidly worsening confrontation. On February 28, the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran that has so far killed more than 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded forcefully with drone and missile attacks targeting not only Israel but also Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries that host American military assets. The back-and-forth has raised fears of a wider war that could directly impact Türkiye’s southern neighbors and regional stability.

Araghchi’s warning appeared aimed at pressuring Gulf Cooperation Council members to distance themselves from Washington’s military posture. For GCC capitals like Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, the prospect of nuclear fallout from a damaged Bushehr plant would be catastrophic due to prevailing winds and proximity. Türkiye, which maintains balanced ties with both Iran and Gulf states, continues to call for restraint and dialogue. Ankara has repeatedly warned that uncontrolled escalation in the Gulf serves no one’s interests except those seeking to plunge the region into prolonged chaos.
