Algerian Civil Protection firefighters and emergency personnel conduct ground operation to battle a raging forest fire in the mountainous countryside near Jijel, Algeria, on August 28, 2026. Sixty-four wildfires were still burning across 10 Algerian provinces on Friday, most of them in the eastern Jijel province, after authorities extinguished 110 out of 174 fires that erupted nationwide over the past 24 hours. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said early Monday that it launched ballistic missiles against two US airbases in Jordan, describing the operation as retaliation for American strikes on Iranian territory that reportedly killed several fighters and civilians.
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday announced that its Aerospace Force had targeted two US airbases in Jordan with ballistic missiles, describing the operation as direct retaliation for American strikes on Iranian territory earlier in the day that reportedly killed several fighters and civilians. The IRGC said the King Hussein and Azraq airbases were hit in a combined missile-and-drone operation targeting technical infrastructure and areas where fighter jets were stationed.
The guard said the strikes inflicted "heavy damage" on the facilities, and warned that any further attack would be met with an even stronger response. The operation came just hours after US forces struck Iranian targets on Larak Island.
US hits Larak Island
Earlier Sunday, US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, marking the first strikes on Iranian territory since late July, a US official told Axios. The operation targeted systems allegedly being prepared to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz, according to the same source.
Casualties reported
The IRGC said several fighters and civilians were killed and injured in the Larak Island attack and vowed to respond to the aggression. Iran's Tasnim news agency reported that preliminary information suggested the Larak attack was carried out by drones.
War enters second month
Tensions between Tehran and Washington have remained high since the war began with strikes on Iran in late February. Although a framework deal was signed in June through Pakistani and Qatari mediation, in July the US began a two-week bombing campaign and reimposed a naval blockade after differences over navigation in the strategic waterway.
