Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani officially inaugurated the reopened Syrian embassy in Tripoli on Sunday, marking the restoration of diplomatic relations after a 14-year closure that began during the Syrian conflict, with the ceremony drawing attendance from Arab and foreign diplomats in the Libyan capital.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Sunday inaugurated his country's reopened embassy in Tripoli, ending a 14-year diplomatic absence in a ceremony attended by Arab and foreign diplomats, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

End to 14-year closure

The mission had remained closed since 2011, when regional governments severed ties with Damascus amid the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. The reopening signals a continued normalization of relations between the two Arab states as the new Syrian administration seeks to rebuild its regional standing.

Shaibani assumed leadership of the Foreign Ministry following the political transition in Damascus last December. His visit to Tripoli marks one of several high-level engagements aimed at restoring Syria's diplomatic footprint across North Africa and the broader Middle East.

Ceremony details

The inauguration drew officials from Libya's Government of National Unity and representatives from Arab diplomatic missions accredited to Tripoli. The Syrian flag was raised above the embassy compound during the formal proceedings, which took place in the presence of senior Libyan protocol officials.
