An Israeli drone strike targeting a vehicle near the Lebanese-Syrian border killed four people Sunday evening, Lebanon's official news agency reported. The Israeli military claimed the attack hit Islamic Jihad operatives in the Majdal Anjar area, marking another violation of the November 2024 ceasefire agreement.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported that an Israeli drone struck a car between the al-Masnaa border crossing and the village of Jdeidet Yabous. The agency said four explosions were heard in surrounding villages, with casualties confirmed though the number of wounded remains unclear. The targeted area sits at a strategic junction along the porous Lebanon-Syria frontier.

Israel claims Islamic Jihad target

The Israeli military issued a statement claiming responsibility for the strike, asserting it targeted members of the Islamic Jihad Movement in the Majdal Anjar area. There has been no immediate comment from the Palestinian faction regarding the incident or confirmation of casualties among its ranks. The attack follows a pattern of Israeli operations against suspected militant targets along Lebanon's eastern border.

Pattern of ceasefire violations

Sunday's strike represents the latest in a series of Israeli breaches of the November 2024 truce that ended months of intensive fighting. Israel continues to occupy five Lebanese hilltops seized during the conflict that began in October 2023, in addition to other Lebanese territories it has held for decades. The continued military operations undermine the ceasefire framework and risk reigniting tensions along the volatile border.

Mounting Lebanese casualties

The offensive campaigns since October 2023 have exacted a heavy toll on Lebanon, with more than 4,000 people killed and 17,000 wounded, according to official figures. Sunday's strike adds to the growing death toll and highlights the fragility of the cessation of hostilities. For regional observers including Türkiye, which maintains concern for Lebanon's stability and sovereignty, the repeated violations underscore the urgent need for international pressure to uphold ceasefire commitments and prevent further escalation.
