Summit Agenda and Challenges
The ASEAN dialogue partner sessions, scheduled from Sunday through Tuesday under the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability," will tackle significant trade policy matters including tariff arrangements. Anwar characterized the current global economic climate as turbulent, emphasizing the necessity for regional resilience, cooperative approaches, and maintaining ASEAN's traditional principles of openness and unity.
Economic Partnerships and Expansion
The Malaysian leader highlighted the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership's growing importance as the world's largest trade agreement, representing nearly one-third of global economic output and trade volume. Malaysia recently confirmed that RCEP members, including China, are considering both membership expansion and mechanisms to enhance trade flows within the framework.
Security Preparations and Participation
Malaysian authorities have deployed over 10,000 police personnel and implemented road closures to ensure summit security according to state media reports. The event will feature participation from US President Donald Trump alongside representatives from ASEAN's ten member states: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
