Oman hopeful for temporary Hormuz Strait shipping corridor

Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi said Tuesday that Muscat is hopeful a temporary shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz will soon be announced following talks with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Tehran. The meeting focused on arrangements concerning the strategic strait — a vital chokepoint for global oil and gas exports — according to the Oman News Agency.

"I am hopeful we will soon announce a temporary corridor for the Strait of Hormuz and practical arrangements to restore safe navigation," al-Busaidi wrote in a social-media post following the meeting. He noted that discussions with regional partners will continue, adding that "future management of the strait and a permanent solution will follow in due course, as per Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum."

Maritime security

The visit comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Muscat to address maritime security concerns in the region. "Discussions with regional partners will be held to promote peace, cooperation, and freedom of navigation," al-Busaidi said. The Islamabad Memorandum establishes the framework for permanent solutions, though details remain under negotiation between the two nations.
