Thousands gather in southern Philippines as tensions rise over Bangsamoro peace process

A massive public rally is now unfolding in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), southern Philippines, amid growing political tensions surrounding the future of the Bangsamoro peace process and the stability of the region’s transitional government.
Crowds composed of civilians, youth groups, community leaders, former combatants, and supporters of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have gathered to express concern over what many describe as increasing political interference from the national government in the affairs of the Bangsamoro autonomous government.
At the center of the unrest are accusations that key provisions of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) — the landmark peace agreement signed between the Philippine government and the MILF in 2014 — remain inadequately implemented years after its signing.

Protesters and political observers also raised concerns over the reported removal and sidelining of several MILF-aligned officials within the Bangsamoro government, warning that such actions could weaken the political foundations of the peace process ahead of the region’s first parliamentary elections.
Many participants described the issue not merely as an internal political dispute, but as a broader struggle over the integrity, independence, and direction of the Bangsamoro transition.
Demonstrators carried placards calling for the protection of the MILF-GPH peace process, the preservation of the CAB, and respect for the sacrifices made during decades of armed conflict that eventually led to the creation of BARMM.
Some sectors also expressed dissatisfaction with the current regional leadership, accusing the administration of failing to uphold the original principles and consultative spirit of the Bangsamoro transition process.
The Bangsamoro region was established as part of a historic peace settlement intended to end decades of conflict in Mindanao, one of Southeast Asia’s longest-running insurgencies.
Political analysts warn that escalating tensions between factions within the Bangsamoro leadership, combined with unresolved issues between the national government and MILF leadership, could have significant implications for the fragile peace process in the region.

As of writing, the rally remains ongoing, with organizers insisting that the mobilization is aimed at defending the peace agreement, protecting Bangsamoro autonomy, and asserting the voice of the Bangsamoro people amid mounting political uncertainty.
