US and Peru strengthen security, critical minerals cooperation in talks

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Peru's foreign minister to advance joint efforts against transnational crime and secure critical mineral supply chains, ahead of a 2026 diplomatic anniversary.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Peruvian Foreign Minister Hugo de Zela on Friday, focusing on enhanced cooperation to combat transnational criminal organizations and strengthen regional security. According to the State Department, Rubio reaffirmed Washington's commitment to partnering with Lima on securing critical mineral supply chains, a key strategic priority for both nations.
Focus on Crime, Minerals, and Security
In a post on X following the meeting, Rubio stated the discussions advanced efforts to "disrupt transnational criminal organizations in our region, boost cooperation on critical minerals, and strengthen security cooperation." A Peruvian Foreign Ministry statement confirmed the commitment and highlighted that a high-level US delegation of security experts will visit Lima next week to develop a concrete strategy against organized crime.
Broadening Cooperation in Space and Trade
The dialogue also covered opportunities for collaboration in aviation and space, alongside the importance of deepening economic and trade relations. The talks were held in the context of upcoming bicentennial celebrations, as the two countries prepare to mark 200 years of diplomatic relations in 2026. The US established formal ties with Peru in 1826, following Peru's independence from Spain.
Upcoming High-Level Visit
As part of the anniversary observances, Secretary Rubio accepted an invitation to visit Peru next year at the invitation of his counterpart. The planned visit and the imminent security delegation underscore a concerted effort to modernize and expand the bilateral partnership, moving beyond traditional diplomacy into tangible cooperation on security, economic resilience, and strategic resources.
