Seven extremists, suspected of links to ISIL, dead in gunbattle with police in southeastern province
Two police officers were killed early Monday in clashes with gunmen occupying a flat allegedly used as a base of operations by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
The raid was launched at 4 am in the Kayapınar district of the southeastern province of Diyarbakır. It was motivated by intelligence which warned of a flat in the central district serving as a base for ISIL-linked terrorists.
The injured officers were taken to a nearby private hospital by an ambulance immediately after the incident, where they died from injuries suffered in the operation.
An unspecified number of police forces were involved in the operation, which was conducted amid massive security measures. Special forces operations supported the operation, which is reportedly still in progress.
Police sources said seven people believed to be ISIL terrorists were found dead after the raid.
Explosions and gunfire were heard during the clashes, according to local residents.
