Greece, France discuss strategic autonomy, latest developments in Middle East

Foreign ministers of both countries also talk about European priorities, Gaza, Ukraine, Syria

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis met with his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot in Paris on Friday to discuss bilateral ties, European priorities, and international issues, including Gaza, Ukraine, Syria.

Speaking to Greek broadcaster ERT after the meeting, Gerapetritis said both countries “share a common understanding” of the situation in the Middle East and emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages.

“We noted the need to establish a European mechanism to monitor the humanitarian aid currently being provided in order to prevent a catastrophic humanitarian crisis,” he said.

Turning to Ukraine, both the ministers reiterated their condemnation of Russia's ongoing “aggression,” with Gerapetritis calling for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire.”

On Syria, they stressed the need for inclusive governance and protection of religious communities. Gerapetritis said the transitional government “must concretely demonstrate its inclusive nature” and ensure the security of all citizens.

The two ministers also addressed European matters, expressing full alignment on the need to enhance the EU's strategic autonomy in defense and foreign policy.

“We are in complete agreement with the French government that Europe must strengthen its strategic autonomy,” Gerapetritis said.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the EU's external borders and ensuring a fair distribution of responsibilities on migration.
