Türkiye and Iran deepen ties on trade, security and regional issues

During a key diplomatic meeting in Tehran, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Iranian counterpart agreed to enhance cooperation on border trade, energy, and addressing irregular migration. The talks also yielded a unified stance on regional security, with both nations identifying a common challenge to Middle Eastern stability.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has concluded a significant working visit to Tehran, resulting in strengthened commitments between Türkiye and Iran across several strategic areas. The high-level talks focused on expanding economic cooperation in trade and energy, improving border infrastructure, and presenting a united front on pressing regional security matters, signaling a deepening of the bilateral relationship.
Expanding Economic and Border Cooperation
A central outcome of the discussions was a mutual agreement to boost economic ties. Minister Fidan emphasized that while trade and energy are top priorities, "there is much more to be done" to enhance efficiency. The two neighbors plan to increase the number of border gates and implement new logistics projects to facilitate smoother cross-border trade. In a move reinforcing diplomatic ties, Fidan welcomed Iran's plan to establish a new consulate in the eastern Turkish province of Van.
A Joint Approach to Regional Challenges
The foreign ministers also coordinated on critical regional issues, including the challenge of irregular migration from Afghanistan. Fidan stated that concrete cooperation with Iran is essential to tackle this issue effectively. On the subject of Middle Eastern stability, the officials found common ground, with Fidan noting they share the view that "Israel is the biggest threat to stability in the region," citing concerns over Gaza and Israeli policies.
Diplomatic Support and Future Engagements
The diplomatic engagement extended beyond immediate concerns, with Türkiye reaffirming its support for Iran during its nuclear negotiations and calling for the lifting of sanctions. Both sides agreed to hold the next High-Level Cooperation Council meeting at the presidential level soon. During his visit, Fidan also met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the speaker of Iran's parliament, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the dialogue between the two nations.
