Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan (R) and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (L) hold a joint press conference in Istanbul, Turkiye on January 30, 2026.
Hakan Fidan spoke with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi on Monday to discuss ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and maintaining the fragile ceasefire, as Ankara and Tehran coordinate their positions amid the continuing regional conflict.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by telephone with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Monday to discuss negotiations over reopening the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to maintain the ceasefire, according to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.
Diplomatic channels amid Hormuz closure
The call comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked following military exchanges between Iran and the United States and Israel, disrupting global energy shipments through the vital chokepoint. Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said the two ministers reviewed the current status of negotiations aimed at reopening the waterway and ensuring maritime security in the Gulf region.
Ceasefire maintenance efforts
Fidan and Araghchi also addressed the fragile ceasefire that has taken hold following weeks of conflict, with both sides emphasizing the need for sustained diplomatic engagement. The conversation reflects ongoing coordination between Ankara and Tehran as they seek to prevent further escalation in the Middle East.
Regional coordination
The discussion follows recent high-level contacts between the two neighbors as Ankara maintains its diplomatic engagement with Tehran amid the ongoing conflict that began in late February. Monday's exchange reflects Türkiye's continuing role in regional mediation efforts while Iran faces sustained international pressure over maritime security issues.
