Syrian tribal forces seize key energy fields from YPG in Deir ez-Zor

Tribal forces in eastern Syria have taken control of the strategically vital Al-Omar oil field and Koniko natural gas field in Deir ez-Zor province. The move follows a withdrawal of US forces from the area and marks a significant shift in control away from the YPG/SDF. The tribes also captured numerous surrounding towns and villages.
Tribal fighters in Syria have gained control of major oil and natural gas fields in the Deir ez-Zor region east of the Euphrates River, in a significant shift of power away from the YPG/SDF. The Al-Omar oil field and the Koniko natural gas field are now reported to be under tribal authority, according to sources on the ground.
The Tribal Advance and Strategic Gains
The operation saw tribal groups, reportedly reinforced from areas west of the Euphrates, advance against YPG/SDF positions. Alongside the critical energy infrastructure, the forces also captured a string of towns and villages including Abu Hamam, Baghouz, and Hatla. This expansion of tribal control comes amid a reported security vacuum following the recent pullback of US troops, who had previously used some of these locations as bases.
Broader Security Developments in the Region
The changes in Deir ez-Zor coincide with other security operations across northeastern Syria. Syrian state media showed images of locations, such as the Al-Halabiya Roundabout and the Hatlah checkpoint, after YPG/SDF forces vacated them. In a separate development west of Raqqa, Syrian army and internal security forces were reported to have taken full control of the al-Tabqah military prison and airport, with security forces also deploying in Al-Husseiniyah village.
Implications of the Shift in Control
The takeover of the energy fields by local tribal forces represents a substantial change in the dynamics of eastern Syria, a resource-rich area that has been a focal point of conflict and geopolitical competition. The Al-Omar field is one of Syria's largest oil assets, making its control a key strategic and economic prize in the ongoing conflict.
