Police engage Papua separatist group in shootout, after attack on construction workers

Police and military personnel in Papua engaged in a firefight on Wednesday (December 5) with the separatist group believed to have brutally murdered 19 construction workers in Mbua District in West Papua, Indonesia. The killing of the workers is one of the worst outbreaks of violence in years in Papua, home to a simmering separatist conflict since it was incorporated into Indonesia after a widely criticized U.N.-backed referendum in 1969.
