261 foreign nationals missing after Tibet mudslide disaster

Chinese state media reported on Sunday that 546 people remain unaccounted for following Wednesday's mudslide at Gyirong Port on the Nepal-China border, including 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, as the confirmed death toll rose to 16.

Foreign nationals listed among victims

Xinhua News Agency identified the missing foreign nationals as including 104 people from Nepal, 49 from India, and 33 from Latvia. The remainder comprise citizens from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Estonia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Kazakhstan, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Ukraine, Spain, and Hungary, according to the state-run outlet.

Beijing has notified the embassies and consulates of the affected countries regarding the status of their nationals. The latest figures emerged following a joint search and cross-checking operation involving foreign affairs, public security, culture and tourism, and emergency management authorities.

Severe weather hits Himalayan region

The mudslide struck Gyirong Port, a key trade crossing located in the area China designates as the Xizang Autonomous Region. In neighboring Nepal, separate devastating floods have killed at least 734 people, with nearly 2,500 others reported missing, according to official figures and local media reports.
