An aftermath view of flash flood and mudslides on the Nepal-China border on August 26, 2026 in Nuwakot, Nepal. The death toll from a devastating flash flood on the border climbed to 97 as at least 384 tourists and travelers, as well as soldiers and police, were reported missing.

The death toll from catastrophic flash floods sweeping through Nepal and southwestern China has climbed to 472, with authorities confirming more than 1,000 people remain unaccounted for across the Himalayan region as international rescue teams battle damaged infrastructure to reach isolated communities.

Devastating flash floods and landslides that struck northern and central Nepal early Wednesday have claimed at least 472 lives across the Himalayan region, with authorities in Kathmandu and Beijing confirming the rising casualty count as search operations continued through Friday.

Cross-border death toll

The disaster has affected both sides of the Nepal-China border, with The Kathmandu Post reporting 469 fatalities in Nepal as of Friday while Chinese authorities confirmed three additional deaths in the southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, commonly known as Tibet. The floods erupted when torrential rains overwhelmed the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, sending walls of water cascading through mountain communities and sweeping victims downstream before dawn on Wednesday.

Hundreds remain missing

The Nepal Tourism Board said late Thursday that 667 people, including foreign nationals, remained missing in Nepal alone. Chinese officials reported more than 550 people unaccounted for in Tibet, including 260 foreign nationals, bringing the total number of missing across both countries to well over 1,000. Search teams are prioritizing the verification of tourists and travelers who were in the hard-hit districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading when the disaster struck.

Rescue operations face obstacles

The Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have deployed specialized teams for search, rescue and evacuation efforts across the affected regions. Helicopters have been mobilized to airlift survivors from isolated mountain areas cut off by destroyed roads and bridges, while ground crews scour riverbanks and downstream settlements for victims. Authorities warned that the full extent of the destruction remains unclear as officials continue reconciling casualty reports from remote areas where communication lines have been severed.
