Decades-long cooperation
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev hosted former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko in Baku on Monday for discussions centered on bilateral relations, with the two leaders reviewing cooperation that has developed over more than two decades. The meeting brought together officials whose acquaintance dates back to the early 2000s, according to a post on the social media platform X.
In the online statement, Aliyev noted that the pair exchanged views on future prospects for their countries' partnership. "We shared fond memories, recalled our joint efforts to strengthen Azerbaijan-Ukraine relations, and exchanged views on the future prospects of our ties," he said, highlighting the historical depth of their diplomatic engagement.
Honorary citizenship ceremony
Ukrainian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Yuriy Husyev used the occasion to present Aliyev with a certificate naming him an Honorary Citizen of Irpin, a Ukrainian city, the Azerbaijani president's office reported. The presentation took place during the formal meeting between the two former heads of state.
Yushchenko, who served as Ukraine's president from 2005 to 2010 following the Orange Revolution, arrived in Baku on Sunday to participate in the diplomatic exchange. His visit comes as both nations continue to evaluate the trajectory of their bilateral cooperation in the South Caucasus region.
