Key Daesh leader captured in joint Syrian and coalition operation near Damascus

Taha al-Zoubi, known as the Damascus 'wali' or governor for the Daesh terrorist group, was apprehended in an operation in the Syrian capital's countryside. The capture, involving Syrian intelligence and the US-led coalition, prevented a potential attack as the suspects were wearing explosive vests.
A senior Daesh commander, who served as the terrorist group's leader for the Damascus region, was captured in a coordinated security operation on Wednesday. The joint mission, conducted by Syrian internal security forces and units from the US-led international coalition, took place in the countryside of the Syrian capital.
The Operation and Capture
Citing an Interior Ministry source, Syria’s state-run Al-Ikhbariyah television reported the successful capture of Daesh's so-called governor for Damascus. The target was identified as Taha al-Zoubi, also referred to as Abu Omar Tibiya. He was apprehended along with several of his aides in the Muaddamiyah district following an extended surveillance period.
Details from Security Officials
Brigadier General Ahmad al-Dalati, head of Internal Security for the Damascus Countryside, provided details to Syria’s official SANA news agency. He stated the operation was a collaborative effort between the General Intelligence Directorate and coalition forces targeting an active Daesh cell. "After a long period of surveillance, a joint operation was conducted," al-Dalati said, emphasizing the high level of threat. He confirmed the captured individuals were wearing explosive vests at the time of their arrest, indicating they were likely planning an imminent attack.
Context and Regional Security
The capture of a high-ranking Daesh figure in the Damascus countryside underscores the persistent, though diminished, threat posed by the terrorist organization's remnants in Syria. Such joint operations between local forces and the international coalition highlight ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the region. The operation's success neutralizes a key node in the terrorist network's command structure. Türkiye, which has long faced threats from terrorist groups along its southern border with Syria, consistently emphasizes the importance of regional stability and the eradication of terrorist entities for its own national security.
